The VIPRE software installs quickly and even more importantly, runs quietly in the background without bogging down your computer.

I have previously used Norton - Symantic antivirus software but the last update had a serious impact on my ageing PC. The VIPRE has a much lower memory and processor loading.

The initial scan took some time (I actually left it overnight) but subsequently I forgot it was there.

If you have an older PC, this is the software to try.

I will be sticking with it.

Vipre is a relatively new antivirus product from Sunbelt software. It claims to be light, with low footprint, and protects against viruses and malware by doing regular scans, actively looking at programs being run (and files being opened) and monitoring eMails.

It has a few extras, like a file shredder and history cleaner, and a system display module. It doesn't have other security capabilities: so it's not an 'all-in-one' like the McAfees and Nortons of this world, that throw in things like parental controls, firewalls, backup utilities and anything else that takes their fancy.

Scans can be scheduled however you like, and it offers both deep and quick scans (the latter only covering the most commonly affected areas). The scans, and most other options, can be customized via the management console. It updates its definitions every couple of hours by default, and you can be part of the 'ThreatNet Community' (if you wish) where if your PC identifies something new it's sent back to Sunbelt.

The virus definitions do seem to be updated on at least a daily basis, implying that Sunbelt are keeping up to date (although, of course, it's hard to tell if they've not countered a latest threat until you get hit - though I haven't yet).

It's based on a subscription model, £27ish for one year for one PC, or around £40 to cover all the machines in your house (Amazon prices). The subscription model is pretty common now across all this type of software, so there's nothing unusual there.

So how well does it work? Actually, I think it does meet its claims - it's the lowest footprint antivirus product I've met so far, and doesn't seem to be the bloated resource-devouring monster that so many of these products have become: the scans are fast and unobtrusive. The checks on running a program seem quick as well. It's also extremely easy to set up and configure.

So it's part of security system, not all. Within that, I like it. You can get cheaper - but the 'all machines in your house' version drops the price considerably for some. I don't think you'll get better at the moment for what it does. So I'll give it five.
